Paper.io places players in a digital arena where the goal is to control as much of the map as possible. Each player maneuvers a square that leaves a colored trail. By forming loops and enclosing space, you claim that portion of the grid as your own territory. At the beginning of each match, you start with a small home base. You venture out, leaving a path behind you, and aim to connect back to your existing territory to grow it. The more area you conquer, the higher your score. But every moment spent outside your zone is risky.
The gameplay environment is a free-for-all, with many players attempting to dominate the same map. There are no rounds or teams, and matches continue until you're eliminated or you reach an impressive share of the map—up to 100%, although it's rare.
